- In 1524, Giovanni da Verrazzano sailed to North America in search of a sea route to the Pacific.
- 10 years later Jacques Cartier reached New York harbor and named it St. Lawrence
- He also discovered Canada
- Samuel de Champlain came to North America with colonists and set up Quebec
- After that lots of Europeans came to explore and found lots of places
- There weren’t many people in New France
- Most of them were young men
- The main economy in America was fur trade
- They were more interested in making money off the land than occupying territories
- In 1606, the English followed the Spanish and French’s lead and set sail to the American coast, when they arrived they named their land Jamestown
- It started off as a very unsuccessful town but became more successful when they started growing tobacco.
- Pilgrims were the people who founded Plymouth, the second English colony in North America
- Puritans wanted religious freedom so they came to America to start a new life
- It was full of families instead of individuals
- They set out to make a model society
- Henry Hudson, an englishman who worked for the Netherlands, looked for a route to Asia but instead founded the Hudson River, the Hudson Bay, and the Hudson Strait
- The established the Dutch West India Company and colonized in America
- They called this New Netherland
- The French had Haiti, Guadeloupe, and Martinique
- The English had Barbados and Jamaica
- The Dutch had Antilles and Aruba
- Built up a cotton business in the Caribbean and used enslaved Africans
- The Duke of York from England claimed New Netherland without firing a shot, he named it New York
- The French and English started butting heads over land
- Lead to the French Indian War
- Became part of the bigger seven years war
- The Dutch and French had a semi cooperative relationship with Native Americans
- The English and Native Americans had a cooperative relationship at first but it worsened over time
- They battled and eventually the settlers won
- Diseases killed many Native Americans
